Charonite recognises that keeping our environment clean and sustainable for the present and future generation is of utmost importance. We recognise that everyone’s contributions count and strive to do our part to help the world achieve a better quality of life through our products and our working practices.

We are constantly working at finding energy efficient practices at our offices and to use environmentally friendly materials in our deployed hardware to the maximum extent possible. Our staff are encouraged to use car pooling and low carbon transportation means whenever practical.

Our flagship product, the Obulus Platform, enables cities to lower their carbon emissions significantly by providing traffic and vehicular management applications that help improve traffic flow, thus reducing congestion and traffic jams, and consequently lowering the amount of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide emissions. Our innovative variable rate congestion charge technology also enables ecologically friendly measures to be adopted in a flexible and fair manner. A practical application of this technology has been used to favour vehicles using electrical engines, providing them free access to charging zones, while being able to penalise vehicles that have environmentally friendly, inefficient old engines. The Obulus Platform is estimated to have saved over 6,406 tonnes of CO2 emissions during 2007-2010 alone (998 tonnes in 2007; 1,713 tonnes in 2008; 1,885 tonnes in 2009; 1,810 tonnes in 2010; using EPA-based vehicle emissions average data), which is equivalent to the total annual emission of around 750 to 1,000 vehicles or the total annual emissions of over 400 people. It is a small start, but the amount of savings is poised to grow significantly as our systems are deployed in an increasing number of sites.

We believe in the power of intelligent solutions to provide a flexible yet effective reduction in CO2 emissions by changing driver behaviour in a subtle manner, encouraging environmentally friendly behaviours while discouraging environmentally destructive behaviours.

For our new office block, Charonite also ensured that we have the best energy saving measures in place, including a significantly large photovoltaic energy generation system that generates enough electricity for all our lighting needs; special insulation material to cut down on A/C costs; double-glazing and special glass coatings and sealing techniques that minimise leaks and cut down on radiative losses; and a better use of natural airflow and light to cut down on energy. We have also applied our IT expertise to monitor the electricity usage of our various computing machinery and other equipment in realtime, enabling us to identify any optimisation in energy use quickly and efficiently based on historical data.

Charonite is committed towards developing green technologies in the transportation and cloud computing industries that affect the environment positively in a transparent manner, favouring their adoption by providing readily accessible solutions for a better future.
